Good morning,
This is principal Dorado with an important update. We are anticipating significant heat across the region this week. Please know that as always, we prioritize the safety and well-being of everyone in our school community.
In addition, we are taking the following measures to ensure that we continue to provide a safe and comfortable learning environment:
- Modified schedules for recess/nutrition/lunch to ensure that students are not outdoors for an excessive amount of time.
- Modified activities during physical education and Beyond the Bell programs.
- Working with our Building and Grounds team to ensure that our HVAC systems are fully operational.
- Keeping doors and windows closed in air-conditioned rooms.
- Providing students with frequent reminders and opportunities to drink water.
- Observing students during physical activity periods and modify and/or limiting activities, as necessary.
- Limiting the use of asphalt, concrete, playground equipment, and artificial turf surfaces to cooler early hours, if these surfaces are too hot.
To support us in this effort, please consider the following:
- Wear comfortable clothing that is breathable, light colored, lightweight and loose.
- Apply sunscreen and wear proper clothing and hats to prevent sunburn for times when students may be outside, such as if they walk to or from school.
- Drink lots of water to prevent dehydration and bring liquids and snacks as appropriate. Water containers should not be shared between students and students may not consume food or drink while riding on District buses.
- If your student has any underlying health conditions exacerbated by heat, inform the school nurse or classroom teacher.
- Symptoms of heat related illness, such as fatigue, fainting, dehydration, thirst, or muscle cramps should be reported to a coach or teacher immediately.
Additional information on preventing heat stress may be found at www.lausd.org/oehs, or at @laschools.
Thank you for your continued engagement and support. Should you have any questions, please contact the main office at (818) 367-1864.
